I got a knock at my door just now. I never have anyone come over, so I was a little wary as to who it was. I saw it was my neighbor. She is a grandma and just wanted to warn me not to let Zane play outside today because we had a visitor. She pointed to the stairwell and sure enough, there was a raccoon fast asleep. She told me that it had been on their back porch, like right next to their back door. She had been keeping an eye on it all morning. It was walking funny and seemed very drowsy so she put out a bowl of water for it. She had called the apartment office and they called the humane society. The humane society doesn't seem too worried about it and said that maybe they would come pick it up sometime today. There are 7 kids in the 8 apartments right here and we are a little concerned that one of the kids will bother it and get bit. Does anyone know anything about raccoons? They are nocturnal aren't they. So is this normal for it to be so sleepy and walk funny, or should I be calling to get this thing out of here now? Anyways, Zane is excited and now is only talking about the raccoon. I had to take a picture of this animal right in the middle of the city. So strange for me. (It is really sad that this is the highlight of our day so far isn't it?)

I sent this out as an e-mail yesterday first because I was hoping to get some answers. Thank you to all of you who e-mailed me back with advice and encouragement. I think it was pretty much unanimous that the raccoon probably had rabies. It was still there when we went out to run errands at about 3, but was gone by 5 when we got home. We haven't seen any since, much to Zane's dismay. On our walk tonight, he kept looking for and asking where the raccoon was.
