On April 30, we were so excited to welcome Uncle Ben home from his mission in the Philippines. Ben is Mike's youngest brother. The day didn't go anywhere near how we thought it would, but we were so grateful to see the tender mercies of the Lord all day long.
It started with Cory, Mike's brother-in-law, getting worse in whatever this strange thing that came upon him. Chaney and Jim took him to the hospital early in the morning and then he was admitted later that night. He finally was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome and you can read more about his ordeal here.
People in our ward heard what was going on and brought us food to help out. Cory and Chaney's home teacher was able to help them get admitted to the hospital. Also, we were able to get all the signs and posters done before we left to welcome Ben home. Just as we were getting ready to leave for the airport, with a messy house, I asked Karma to check the flight info. We were blessed and Ben's flight ended up being an hour late and so we were able to clean up dinner and the house and not be in a rush when we left. The kids were so good at the airport. This was so wonderful being down three adults (Mike had to work so he had to miss the airport along with Chaney and Cory). Randall was so super to come and help us out and be our videographer.
Two other missionaries came home on the same flight, so we had company while we waited. Ben came off the airplane before the other two and surprised us by how casual he was.
Ben left with 2 nephews and 1 niece. He came home to 3 nieces and 4 nephews. Rigg and Nate are the same age that Hazen and Zane were when he left so Ben still gets to go through those fun stages, just with different kids. Ben hadn't met either of Chaney's girls, so introductions were very fun to watch.
Because his flight was late, we had to rush to get Ben to the Stake President's office to get released. Randall, Stephanie and I took Zane, Nate and Rubi home to get ready for bed since it was after 9 pm already. As soon as we got home, I tried to give Rubi some Mucinex and she threw it up all over my living room floor. Steph was running to the sink so she didn't throw up too. The first and only thing she said was "My shoes!" since she threw up righ on her shoes. She definitely is Chaney's daughter.
Mike did finally get to see his little bro at 1 am when he got home. Ben also got the opportunity to go down to the hospital to see Chaney and Cory after he got released. We are all glad to have Uncle Ben home.
