Nate's Birthday Party!

We had Nate's 1st birthday party on Saturday, June 27th. I decided, with the help of Chaney, to have a monkey theme. I wanted to buy a cake pan that made a monkey face. I couldn't find this particular pan in the stores, so I looked up online for ideas. I figured out what I wanted to do and my Mom helped me implement my plan. We baked 2-9 inch circle layers for the head, some cake in an oval Pyrex dish for the nose and 2 custard cups for the ears. Of course, the cake had to be Chocolate. I used toothpicks and wooden skewers to put it together and frosted it. The head part and outside edges of the cake are frosted with chocolate frosting. I frosted the eyes, nose and inside of the ears with a mix of chocolate and vanilla canned frosting to make light brown. I dyed coconut brown (mix 4 drops of red food coloring, 4 drops of yellow, and 4 drops of green in a jar. Pour in the coconut and shake until the coconut is covered. If it is not the right color, mix some water with more food coloring and mix in. I looked up the directions online if this is too confusing.) and put it all over the head for fur. I left the eyes without fur and cut a marshmallow in half for the whites of the eyes and used a lifesaver for the iris. I used black painting frosting for the pupils. I also left the insides of the ears and the nose without fur. TheseI also drew on with black painting frosting for the nose, mouth and lines in the ears. I was really super happy with how it turned out. Also, it tasted fabulous too. We gave Nate an entire ear to munch on. He was so cute getting the cake every where. But he was tired and started rubbing his face, this is when it started to get sad. The coconut actually scratched his face as he rubbed it. He had it everywhere, including in his ears.

I bought a monkey toss game with banana bean bags for the kids to play with while we started the party. I also had some monkey face suckers and monkey stickers for the kids to take home. Nate on ly sort of liked opening his presents. The other kids sure enjoyed playing with all of the presents though.

It was a pretty short party and then it was off to the circus. That is another post though.
