Waiting For The Bus

Zane is a lot more perceptive then I sometimes give him credit for. On June 5th, he woke up and wanted to get dressed right away. He grabbed his backpack and told me to come walk him out. (The Giffords always walk everyone that leaves out to their car and so Zane has picked up on that.) I thought he just wanted me to go outside with him so I sat on the Porch swing to watch him play. He told me "No Mommy. Out front. I have to wait for the school bus!" I tried to tell him that there was no school bus and that we should just stay out back and play. He was having none of that. He started through the house and out front. I, of course, followed him to see what he would do. He unlocked the front door and walked all the way out to the curb. There he stood looking down the street, waiting for the bus.
I had to call Christi to tell her what I was doing. Here is how our conversation went:

Me: Guess what I am doing this morning?
Christi: I have no clue, what?
M: I am standing in the front yard in my pajamas, watching my son who is standing at the curb, waiting for the bus.
C: (Uncontrollable laughter) Oh really?
M: Guess where he learned this?
C: Too many visits to my house while Jayden waited to go to preschool would be my guess.
M: Yes, that or all the excitement while waiting for Andrea and Jayden to get home from school
C: That could do it.
M: Yeah, oh gee thanks. That would be our young women's president driving by right now. (me waving) At least I put a bra on and combed my hair before coming out here.
C: That is a plus.
M: How do you convince a 2 year old that a school bus is not coming when he is determined that one is coming?
C: Tell him that it is Friday and there is no school on Fridays.
M: Zane, it's Friday there is no school today.
Zane: (with hand cupped around ear) I hear a bus.
C: (More laughing)
M: No, even Andrea is home from summer school today.
Z: (Not budging from his seat)
M: It isn't working. He doesn't care that it's Friday, like he even understands what Friday means.
C: Just wait until he gets tired and you can go inside.
M: Yeah, I don't think that is going to happen. We have been out here for more than 10 minutes already.
C: Well good luck with that! (more laughter)
M: Thanks alot!
After about 15 minutes, I was done trying to reason with him and so i changed my strategy. I told him that we had to go check on Nate and that we would go ask Daddy about the bus. This worked! He followed me inside to fill his backpack. This time he put in books and paper, not just toys. "My homework," he tells me. (This he learned about from Daddy, Stessi and Randall.)
Then he started back outside, still was sure the bus would come later. After some tears and offers to do school with him and even do homework, there was no reasoning with him. What am I going to do with this child? Finally Grandma came home and I convinced him to do Grandma school with Rubi's flash cards. I guess I should be glad that he is excited about school.
