Podiatry School

For those of you who have been keeping tabs on Mike's future plans, you will know that he has been trying to get into dental school. For the last couple of years, we have applied and worked, but not gotten any where. We started exploring our options and found decided that the dental profession is overly saturated (you know how there is a dentist on like every corner and everyone you know, and their brother, are trying to get into dental school) and that maybe that was not the road we should take.

Podiatry (foot doctor) schools accept the DAT scores and is a profession that is not going away (think type 2 diabetes) and might be the field to try. We started applying for podiatry schools. There are only 9 around the US and so we didn't have many choices. We applied to every school and heard back from all of them in some form or another. Some schools put us on waiting lists for interviews, but most of them offered us interviews. We chose which schools were our favorites and started from there. There is a school here in Glendale, AZ and it was our top choice. It was also the first interview that Mike went to, on April 13th. We got a letter on April 24th that told us that we didn't get accepted there. Mike's next interview was in Des Moines, Iowa on April 20th. On April 27th, Mike flew to Pomona, California to interview at Western University of Health Sciences for their new podiatry program. We both had a good feeling about Des Moines and were just waiting for our acceptance. When we received a letter from Western U on May 4th, we were shocked that we were hearing back so soon. We thoguht that it must be a denial. I brought the mail into Mike and he opened the letter. He read it silently with a straight face, then started talking about something else. I had to yell "What does it say!?!" before he broke a smile and told me that we were accepted.

We went over to tell Mike's parents and his dad yelled and danced around. I called my dad to give him a great birthday present. Mike called the next day to find out about Des Moines. They told us that we were on the waiting list, but that we wouldn't know if we got accepted for sure until late June or July. Classes start in August and we knew that wouldn't give us enough time. Plus, we had to have our money into Western U to reserve our seat by June 1st. We decided that we would be moving to California for school and haven't gone back since. On June 7th and 8th, we drove over to Pomona and found an apartment.

We move on July 18th to Ontario, CA. We are sad to be leaving all of our family, but are excited for this new chapter in our lives. We are grateful for blogs, cell phones with free long distance and Skype so that we can stay connevted to our families. Also, Southwest flys directly into Ontario and you can get flights as cheap as $49 each way. Plus, it is only about a 5 1/2 hour drive home. We are just about 17 miles from Disneyland, so we know we will have lots of visitors. We can't wait so start planning your Cali trips. It makes it a bit easier to know that the boys and I will be flying back in October for a baptism and baby blessing. So off we go on our new adventure (yes, I am writing this instead of packing...I am delaying the inevitable)!
